Getting to Tahoe
The closest airport is Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO), which is one hour from the conference venue, the Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa in Stateline, Nevada. Flights to Reno are plentiful and cheap, and the South Tahoe Airporter offers round-trip service from RNO to the Montbleu for $59. Once you're here, no car is necessary (check out the myriad transportation options here). All conference activities are within walking distance or transportation will be provided. Stateline is a walkable village on Lake Tahoe's South Shore, with full amenities and plenty of access to recreation - including the lake.
The Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa is located in the center of Stateline, Nevada. You can book using the special Mountain Town Planners rate (using promo code STMRTP9) of $50 for Wednesday and Thursday (Oct 16 & 17), and $80 Friday night (Oct 18). Conference sessions will take place at the Montbleu, except for guided field trips and tours.
The south shore of Lake Tahoe straddles the Nevada-California border and offers a trove of recreation, dining, and entertainment options. The south shore is unique in many ways, not least of which is the presence of large casino hotels offering gaming opportunities, fine dining, and A-list entertainers. The outdoors are immediately accessible, with hiking, biking, kayaking, and other recreation pursuits within walking distance. October offers the best of both worlds in Tahoe; summer crowds have largely departed, but the weather is mild and sunny. On Saturday, October 19th, the conference will offer a bus tour of the entire lake and its wide variety of ecological and social communities. For those seeking to go further afield, San Francisco, Napa Valley, Point Reyes, and other lowland destinations are about a 3-4 hour drive.
